However, the smell that emanates from swimming pools is not actually caused by the chlorine itself but by chloramine- a chemical that forms when chlorine combines with pool contaminants like urine, sweat and faecal matter. A survey by the Water Quality and Health Council revealed that 20 percent of adults admitted to urinating in swimming pools.
