Artificial heart

Stan Larkin, a 25-year-old American needed a heart transplant due to a condition known as "Familial Cardiomyopathy", which is determined genetically. The disease is known to be the cause of sudden death in athletes since it causes the heart to fail without any previous signs or symptoms.

While waiting for a heart donor, Larkin was approved to be part of a program called SynCardia, in which he received a total artificial heart, powered by a battery he carried in his backpack. He was able to resume an almost normal lifestyle, for 17 months, until a heart donor came forward.
