Why Do Your Lips Get Dryer After You Lick Them?

Dry Lips

Dry Lips (also known as Chapped Lips) occur when the lips are exposed to the wind, the sun and even cold air. When exposed to these harsh conditions, moisture is lost through the thin skin of the lips. This leads to tightening and splitting of the skin.  Other factors such as dehydration and nutritional deficiencies (lack of vitamins B12) can contribute to dry lips.

When you lick your lips, the saliva quickly evaporates, leaving them drier than before. Instead, constantly apply a thick lip balm on the lips. Lip balm acts as a protective barrier from harsh conditions. Also, it traps moisture and seals cracks against infections.
