What exactly is Botox?

One of the ways dermatologists reduce the appearance of wrinkles is the use of Botox.

Botox  is actually derived from botulinum toxin which is produced by the bacterial species Clostridium botulinum.

This bacterium is responsible for the very life-threatening food poisoning called botulism. This toxin causes paralysis in muscles by blocking certain nerves.

The action of this toxin has been used by doctors when they need to induce some form of paralysis. For example, when applied in small doses, it can be used to treat wrinkles by paralysing certain muscles in the face. The effects of Botox typically last for 3 to 12 months.
