In July 2016, Tanzania banned the smoking of hookah. As Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa explained; It is now illegal to smoke hookah in Tanzania.
Hookah is a water-pipe device used to smoke tobacco that is becoming increasingly popular among young people worldwide. Smoke from heated tobacco is made to pass through water and then through a pipe into a mouth piece. It is sometimes flavoured and many people wrongly believe that it is a lot safer than smoking cigarettes.
According to WHO, the smoke of hookah contains toxic substances known to cause lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases. Furthermore, the frequent use of hookah is associated with addiction. The hookah smoker may also inhale as much smoke during one session as a cigarette smoker would inhale consuming 100 or more cigarettes.
