Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character created by Arthur Conan Doyle. The character is based on a renown forensic scientist - Dr Joseph Bell, who Arthur learned under at Edinburgh University while he was studying medicine.

He spent a few years struggling to balance his medical career and writing and eventually gave up his medical career for writing. He wrote 56 short stories and 4 novels that feature Holmes.
