20 Cities With The Worst Air Pollution In The World

The World Health Organisation describes air pollution is a major environmental risk to health. In fact, outdoor air pollution was estimated to cause 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide in 2012 alone. Air pollution has been noted to increase the burden of disease from stroke, asthma, respiratory disease, heart disease and lung cancer.

While certain cities like Beijing might be famous for contaminated air, a 2014 report by the World Health Organisation identified Delhi, a city in India as the worst city for air pollution. Beijing, the Chinese capital didn't even make the top 20.

The report measured the concentration of fine particles suspended in the atmosphere less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter- PM 2.5 (PM stands for ‘Particulate Matter’). The database contained results of outdoor air pollution monitoring from almost 1600 cities in 91 countries. While the report advises PM 2.5 levels of less than 10 micrograms per cubic metre, an annual average concentration of 153 was recorded in the Indian capital. Beijing measured 56, London 16, New York 14, Moscow 22, Paris 17 and Melbourne 5.
